My wedding photography journey began after more than a decade of working as a wedding videographer. I felt confident with cameras, editing, and storytelling, but I always admired photography from the sidelines. When I started expanding into still images, I quickly realized photography and videography are two very different crafts. The transition was challenging, humbling, and incredibly rewarding, and it’s shaped how I work today.
Learning Photography as a Videographer
At first, photography felt easier since it didn’t involve audio or continuous motion. That changed the moment I started working with couples. Wedding photography required new skills entirely: understanding light, mastering composition, and guiding couples into natural poses. I couldn’t lean on a photographer to lead anymore. Once I picked up the camera, the responsibility became mine.
I studied constantly to close the gap: tutorials, practice, and learning from other professionals in the space. Every session taught me something new, and each improvement built my confidence as a photographer alongside my videography work.
Settling on One System
Equipment was another challenge early on. I spent years running two separate systems, one for photography and a different one for video, which meant more gear to carry and more to think about on a wedding day. Since then, I’ve fully transitioned to the Nikon Z system for both crafts: a Nikon ZR and two Nikon Z6III bodies, paired with a Nikon Z 18-75mm f/2.8, and Viltrox 35mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 lenses. Having one system that delivers for both photography and videography means less time thinking about gear and more time focused on actually telling your story.
Growth and Gratitude
What excites me most about this journey is the progress I see with every wedding. Each one teaches me something new, in both photo and video, and that growth keeps fueling the work.
Being able to deliver both photos and video lets me give couples a complete storytelling experience instead of just one half of it. The process hasn’t been simple, but it’s been worth every bit of the challenge. I’m grateful for the couples who’ve trusted me along the way, and I’m looking forward to continuing to improve with every wedding ahead.
